Oktoberfest!
The first Oktoberfest was held on October 17th 1810 in honor or the Bavarian Crown
Prince Ludwig's marriage to Princess Theres von Sachsen-Hildburghausen. He wanted
his people to share in the celebration of his marriage and 40,000 townspeople showed
up in the fields outside the castle. In the following years, the celebrations were
repeated and, later, the festival was prolonged and moved forward into September.
By moving the festivities up, it allowed for better weather conditions, the September
nights were warmer, the visitors were able to enjoy the gardens outside the tents and
stroll over "die Wiesen" or the fields much longer without filling chilly.
The last Oktoberfest weekend was in October and this tradition continues into present
times. Oktoberfest in Munich is the world's largest fair with 6 million visitors and
the highlight of Germany's annual event calendar. The Opening: Watch the official
opening ceremony of Oktoberfest on Saturday, September 20th, in the tent called
“Schottenhamel”. At noon, the mayor of Munich will tap the first keg of Oktoberfest
beer with the traditional cry O`zapft is!(„It is tapped!“)
Oktoberfest Costume Parade: The highlight of the Oktoberfest is the Costume and Riflemen's
Parade. This colorful display of German history and culture takes place in the morning
