Before refrigeration, it was easy to serve cold beer in the Winter, but Summer was another story. An ingenious brewer found a solution. He dug a cellar and planted chestnut trees over it to keep the ground and the beer cool. Soon, people came for a cold draft in the hot weather. They brought their families and enjoyed food and drinks in the shade of the trees. The wise brewer added a few rough-hewn tables and benches, and the first Biergarten was created.
At the Old Stein Biergarten, locals, from all walks of life, gather in an open-air, tree-shaded, lively atmosphere. Sometimes sharing communal wooden tables—always enjoying food, beer and entertainment with family, friends and neighbors.
If you dine on a Saturday evening in the Biergarten, you may be entertained by Sylvia the “strolling accordion player” or one of the other German entertainers. Entertainment may be a beautiful rendition of “Edelweiss” or a crowd sing-along to a traditional German drinking song. Beer stein are raised many a times during an evening with the proper toast of “Prost!”
